1.1. Vấn đề 1: Câu – Một ý tưởng hoàn chỉnh
Một câu là một nhóm các từ diễn tả một Ỳ tưởng hoàn chỉnh.
Example: Mr. Alteria, who is chairman of the Board of Directors. Đây không phái là một câu. Nó không diễn tả một ý tưởng hoàn chỉnh. Câu trên nên được viết lại như sau:
Mr. Alteria, vvho ỉs chairman of the Board of Dỉrectors, announced an increase in stock dividends. Đây là một câu. Nó diễn tá một ý tưởng hoàn chỉnh.

1.3. Vấn đề 3: – Chủ từ đã được hiểu
Trong nhữnq câu chỉ ra một mệnh lệnh hoặc yêu cầu, chủ từ luôn luôn được hiểu là you. Nhưng từ you thườnq không xuât hiện trong câu. Nó không xuất hiện bởi vì từ you vốn được hiêu ngầm lúc một người đ nói trực tiếp với ngiíời khác
Example 1: Please vvrite a report on motivation. Đây là một câu yêu cầu. Chú từ được hiểu là yọu:
(You) Please write a report on motivation.
Example 2: Assign points to each item on the scale. Câu này đưa ra một mệnh lệnh. Chủ từ được hiểu ngầm là you:
(You) Assign points to each item on the scale.

1.4. Vấn đề 4: – Động từ – từ diễn tả hành động
Mỗi một câu phải có một chủ ngữ, vì vậy một câu cũng phải có một vị ngữ. (Vị ngữ gồm động từ và các từ bổ nghĩa của nó). Động từ là một từ cho biết chủ ngữ thực hiện điều gì, chủ ngữ ở trạng thái như thế nào, hoặc những gì xảy ra cho chủ ngữ.

2. Phân loại các loại câu theo cấu trúc ngữ pháp
a. Simple sentences (câu đơn)
– Là câu chỉ có một mệnh đề độc lập.
Ví dụ:
We were sorry. We left. We did not meet all the guests.
We felt the disappointment of our friends at our early departure.
– Câu đơn không phải là câu ngắn mà nó chỉ thể hiện một ý chính.
– Một câu đơn có thể có nhiều hơn một chủ ngữ
Ví dụ:
John and Mary were sorry.
– Một câu đơn có thể có nhiều động từ
Ví dụ:
John ate peanuts and drank coffee.
b. Compound sentences (câu ghép)
– Là câu chứa từ hai mệnh đề độc lập trở lên, diễn tả các ý chính có tầm quan trọng ngang nhau.
– Chúng ta sử dụng các cách sau để nối hai mệnh đề:
+ Sử dụng dấu chấm phẩy:
Ví dụ: The bus was very crowded; I had to stand all the way.
+ Sử dụng dấu phẩy và một liên từ đẳng lập
Ví dụ: The bus was very crowded, so I had to stand all the way.
+ Sử dụng dấu chấm phẩy và một liên từ trạng từ (however, therefore, nevertheless…) và theo sau đó là dấu phẩy
Ví dụ: The bus was very crowded; therefore, I had to stand all the way.
c. Complex sentences
– Là câu chứa một mệnh đề độc lập và một hay nhiều mệnh đề phụ thuộc. Mệnh đề phụ có thể bắt đầu bằng liên từ phụ thuộc hoặc đại từ quan hệ.
Ví dụ:
Because the bus was crowded, I had to stand all the way.
Trong câu trên có một mệnh đề độc lập “I had to stand all the way” và một mệnh đề phụ thuộc “the bus was crowded”
It makes me happy that you love me.
Câu này có một mệnh đề độc lập “it makes me happy” và một mệnh đề phụ thuộc “that you love me”.
– Câu phức sử dụng liên từ phụ thuộc để nối các vế của câu.
We left before he arrived.
d. Compound-complex sentences
– Là câu có ít nhất hai mệnh đề độc lập và ít nhất một mệnh đề phụ thuộc.
Ví dụ: Because she didn’t hear the alarm, Mary was late and the train had already left.
Trong câu trên, có hai mệnh đề độc lập là “Mary was late” và “the train had already left”
Một mệnh đề phụ thuộc là “she didn’t hear the alarm”
Ví dụ: The cat lived in the backyard, but the dog, who knew he was superior, lived inside the house.
Mệnh đề độc lập là: “the cat lived in the backyard”, “the dog lived inside the house”
Mệnh đề phụ thuộc là “who knew he was superior”
3. Phân loại các loại câu theo mục đích và chức năng
a. Câu trần thuật (declarative sentence)
– Là loại câu phổ biến và quan trọng nhất. Nó dùng để truyền đạt thông tin hoặc để tuyên bố một điều gì đó.
Ví dụ:
David plays the piano.
I hope you can come.
b. Câu nghi vấn (interrogative sentence)
– Câu nghi vấn dùng để hỏi.
Ví dụ:
Is this your book?
What are you doing?
Các loại câu hỏi:
– Câu hỏi dạng đảo (yes/ no questions): đảo trợ động từ, động từ khuyết thiếu lên trước chủ ngữ
Ví dụ:
Are you English?
Can you speak English?
Do you learn English at school?
– Câu hỏi đuôi (tag question):
Câu hỏi đuôi là một dạng câu hỏi rất thông dụng trong tiếng Anh. Mặc dù câu trả lời cho câu hỏi đuôi cũng giống như câu trả lời cho câu hỏi YES-NO, nhưng câu hỏi đuôi có sắc thái ý nghĩa riêng biệt.
Câu hỏi đuôi được thành lập sau một câu nói khẳng định hoặc phủ định, được ngăn cách bằng dấu phẩy (,) vì vậy người đặt câu hỏi đã có thông tin về câu trả lời. Tuy nhiên, thường thì người hỏi không chắc chắn lắm về thông tin này. Nếu người hỏi chắc chắn, tự tin rằng mình đã có thông tin về câu trả lời nhưng vẫn hỏi thì khi chấm dứt câu hỏi đuôi, người hỏi sẽ lên giọng.
Nguyên tắc chung khi lập câu hỏi đuôi:
– Nếu câu nói trước dấu phẩy là câu khẳng định, câu hỏi đuôi phải ở thể phủ định.
– Nếu câu nói trước dấu phẩy là câu phủ định, câu hỏi đuôi phải ở thể khẳng định .
– Nếu câu nói trước có “never, hardly, rarely, nobody, nothing”, câu hỏi đuôi phải ở thể khẳng định.
Cấu tạo của câu hỏi đuôi: Câu hỏi đuôi gồm một trợ động từ tương ứng với thì được dùng trong câu nói trước dấu phẩy, có NOT hoặc không có NOT và một đại từ nhân xưng tương ứng với chủ ngữ của câu nói trước dấu phẩy.
Ví dụ:
You are afraid, aren’t you?
You didn’t do your homework, did you?
He never visits you, does he?
Nobody has prepared the lesson, have they?
– Câu hỏi có từ hỏi (Wh-question):
+ Nếu từ để hỏi làm chủ ngữ, cấu trúc câu sẽ là:
Từ hỏi + động từ ……?
Ví dụ:
Who is in the room?
What is on the table?
+ Nếu từ hỏi không phải làm chủ ngữ, cấu trúc câu là:
Từ hỏi + trợ động từ/động từ khuyết thiếu + chủ ngữ + V……?
Ví dụ:
What did you do last night?
Why do you learn English?
Where do you live?
How does she learn English?
Chú ý:
+ Nếu mệnh đề chính là “I am” thì câu hỏi đuôi là “aren’t I?”
Ví dụ: I am coming here, aren’t I?
+ Nếu mệnh đề chính là “let’s..” thì câu hỏi đuôi là “shall we?”
Ví dụ: Let’s go to the movie, shall we?
+ Nếu mệnh đề chính là đề nghị, câu hỏi đuôi sẽ là “will you?"
Ví dụ: Open the window, will you?
– Câu hỏi lựa chọn (alternative question)
Ví dụ:
Are you Vietnamese or English?
+ I’m Vietnamese.
Do you learn English or Russian at school?
+ I learn English.
c. Câu mệnh lệnh (imperative sentence)
– Chúng ta có thể dùng câu mệnh lệnh để đưa ra mệnh lệnh trực tiếp
Ví dụ:
Take that chewing gum out of your mouth.
Stand up straight.
Give me the details.
– Dùng để chỉ dẫn
Ví dụ:
Open your book.
Take two tablets every evening.
– Dùng để mời
Ví dụ:
Come in and sit down. Make yourself at home.
Have a piece of this cake. It’s delicious.
– Chúng ta có thể sử dụng “do” làm cho câu mệnh lệnh “lịch sự” hơn
Ví dụ:
Do be quiet.
Do come.
Do sit down.
d. Câu cảm thán (exclamative sentence)
– Câu cảm thán là câu diễn tả một cảm giác (feeling) hay một xúc động (emotion). Hình thức cảm thán thường được cấu tạo với “what, how”
– Cấu trúc của câu cảm thán dùng “what”
What + a/an + adj + noun
Ví dụ:
What a lazy student!
What an interesting book!
Khi danh từ ở số nhiều, không dùng “a/ an”:
Ví dụ:
What beautiful flowers!
What tight shoes!
Đối với danh từ không đếm được: what + adj + danh từ
Ví dụ: What beautiful weather!
Chú ý: Cấu trúc câu cảm thán với what… có thể có subject + verb ở cuối câu.
Ví dụ:
What delicious food they served! (Họ phục vụ thức ăn ngon quá!)
What a lovely house they have! (Bạn có căn nhà xinh quá!)
– Cấu trúc câu cảm thán dùng “how”:
How + adj + S + V!
Ví dụ:
How cold it is!
How interesting that film is!
How well she sings!
