- What is your favorite TV programme? Why?
- How often do you watch TV?
Example 1:
Among many programs and channels available on TV these days such as the current news programs, sport programs, entertaining programs, educational programs and movie programs, etc, I like the program "the World of Animals" most. This program is usually shown on VTV2 everyday at 8.30 in the evening. It often lasts about 45 minutes. In this program, stories of the life of many animals in the world are told in a very lively way. For example, people can watch films about monkeys, snakes, tigers, insects, birds, sea turtles, sharks etc and even the penguins and the polar bears in the far North. While watching these films, I find the everyday life activities and habits of these animals very interesting and full mysteries. In addition, I also learn that it is very important to protect these animals and their living environments because they are part of our valuable natural world. Watching this program makes me very well informed and relaxed after a day of work.
Example 2:
Watching TV is one of the activities I like to do in my free time. The program I like most is"Korean Food Made Simple".It's on Asian Food Channel. The chef is Judy Joo,she is a Korean-American.Judy Joo is a Korean-American executive chef and food writer now living and working in London as Executive Chef of her restaurant Jinjuu. Her love of Korean food began as a child at home in the U.S., where she watched her mother cook authentic Korean dishes. Judy Joo guides us through classic street food, bustling food markets and fashionable dining trends of the capital Seoul, explores the seafood and classic traditions of the southern beaches of Busan and takes us to the food festivals, harvest and tea plantations of the Mokpo region, as well as introducing her family sharing their culinary traditions. Back in her kitchen, Judy creates dishes inspired by her travels, putting her simple twist on 30 Korean dishes and showing just how easy it is to make Korean favorites with a few key Korean storecupboard ingredients.Korean food is all about sharing, perfect for family and friends.
Topic 2: Your dream house.
- Type of house it is.
- Where is your dream house located?
- What does it look like?
- What is it surrounded?
- What appliances does it have?
Example 1:
My dream house is a large villa. It is near the coast, surrounded by rows of coconut trees and the blue sea. There are sixteen rooms in my house and half of them for relaxation and entertainment. It has a big garage so that I can store my super cars there. My house has wind power or solar energy. I use hi-tech and automatic machines such as a smart clock, modern fridge, automatic dishwasher and washing machine. They can be controlled by voice and help me tell the time, forecast weather, preserve food and wash dishes and clothes. There is a super smart TV in my house. I might surf the internet, watch my favourite TV programme from space or contact friends on other planets by this fantastic TV. I might also join online classes on TV and not have to go to school.
Example 2:
My dream home would be on the ocean, well not on the ocean but beside it with a white sandy beach. The house would be an A frame backed against a hill. The upper floor would be a half floor master bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuit with a hot tub and sauna. The front wall would be glass with a stairway coming up to the bedroom. On cloudy nights you could watch the floresents in the waves coming into the beach while you went to sleep. Other nights you could counting the stars in the western sky.
On the main floor would be the kitchen-dining room combination, with all the newest appliances and an island in the middle of the kitchen with the stove top and hanging pots and pans over it. The sink would be under one of the windows. Under the other window would be the nook for family meals. Between the kitchen windows, which look out to the field where the horses would be enjoying the warm weather are the cupboards. The dining room would have a six chair pine table set and hutch china cabinet. There will also be a three piece bathroom off the kitchen. The living room is in the front with the big front window. The fireplace is on the side wall with small long windows overlooking the driveway to the road a half mile away. The three piece sectional is perfectly positioned to watch the sunset into the western sea. The basement has the laundry room at the back with sewing machine for mending before folding and taking clothes upstairs. Half of the front of the basement is a guest bedroom with ensuite and small fridge and two element stove. The computer room is also at the front of the basement. Both have views of the beach and sea. Opposite the laundry room is my husband's workshop. I don't know what he has in there as it is his domain. In the garage at the side of the house is our wine colored 94 Toyota Crasada and my husband's hog. We often ride the bike along the beach on warm evenings to visit friends.
Topic 3: Environment.
- How is the environment these days?
- What are environmental problems in Viet Nam nowadays?
- What can you do as a student to help the environment?
- What should we do to keep the environment clean?
Example 1:
Well, there are a lot at the moment. Although it has not been proven for sure, there is a great deal of consensus about the fact that global warming is leading to severe weather change and this is resulting in many problems. We are seeing a lot of countries with the same problems that they have always had but on a much larger scale. For example, in the United States there seem to be far more hurricanes and tornadoes than in the past, with more devastating effects. There seems to constantly be news of serious flooding in many countries from Asia to Europe. Forest fires also seem to be getting worse, particularly each year in Australia.
Do you think that governments around the world are doing enough to tackle the problems?
No, usually I don't think they are doing enough. There are countries that do what they can do help their people when problems occur and they are trying to come up with measures to mitigate the effects but when it comes to the major issue of global warming countries are not doing enough. We see time and again that no agreement can be made on how to reduce carbon footprints. This is usually because governments know that to make a serious reduction in carbon dioxide emissions they will have to sacrifice economic growth and they are not prepared to do this. Governments think very short-term. They know that if there is economic decline, then they will be voted out.
Why do some people not consider environmental problems to be serious?
I think there are several reasons for that. In some cases it is simply because people are not affected on a day-to-day basis so it does not concern them. They just see it on the news affecting other people. It does not mean they do not care but they will soon forget about it. Also, some big organizations can be responsible for putting the wrong information out. For example, oil companies have a vested interest in making sure people do not believe in global warming as it could affect their profits, so they play the issue down. Also, some people think as it is a long-term problem, they will be dead by the time it will affect them so they think it is not important for them!
Now we'll look at environmental problems and disasters caused by humans.
What do you consider to be the world’s worst environmental disaster caused by humans?
I think that may be the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. In that case there was an explosion and nuclear meltdown. It caused great loss of life. The environment was badly affected and it is still affected today and could be for many years. There are also many people who are still getting sick from the disaster and no one can live anywhere near the site. Of course there are many other serious ones, some more recent such as the oil spills in Africa and the US.
Why do you think environmental disasters caused by humans happen?
It could be for different reasons. In some cases it is simply because not enough care is taken. Maybe procedures are not good enough. It could also be because the drive for profit means that there is cost cutting and that again could mean that good procedures are not in place. There is usually a situation when a disaster happens where blame will be deflected and it is difficult to establish exactly who is responsible. Nobody wants to admit responsibility because it means they will have to pay compensation. Sometimes a disaster can happen because of a simple mistake by someone.
Do you think there will be more environmental disasters caused by humans in the future?
I don't think there will necessarily be more. Procedures are always getting tighter so in theory there should be fewer, but mistakes will always happen so I'm sure they will continue unfortunately. Governments must continue to prosecute any companies that do cause environments problems or disasters so that they are less likely to happen again.
Example 2:
A variety of environmental problems now affect our entire world. As globalization continues and the earth’s natural processes transform local problems into international issues, few societies are being left untouched by major environmental problems.
Some of the largest problems now affecting the world are Acid Rain, Air Pollution, Global Warming, Hazardous Waste, Ozone Depletion, Smog, Water Pollution, Overpopulation and Rain Forest Destructor.
In my town – Ho Chi Minh city – has two problems very important. These are Air Pollution and Water Pollution.
The first, about Air Pollution. Air Pollution includes contaminants found in the atmosphere. These dangerous substances can be either in the form of gases or particles. There are so much industrial factories in city, there are many vehicles in streets, them released smoke into the atmosphere. And more, forest has being destroy, the atmosphere more and more polluted.
The effects of air pollution are diverse and numerous. Air pollution can have serious consequences for the health of human beings, and also severely affects natural ecosystems.
The second, about Water Pollution. You can see waste every where. You can smell sewage, sludge, garbage from the black river surrounded city. You can’t drink well-water directly. For many years, chemicals were dumped into bodies of water without concern. While many countries have now banned such behavior, it continues to go on today in my city. Sewage was released from industrial factories killing many kind of fish in river, destroying ecosystems…And a important reason is population growth.
The effect of water pollution is dead fish, birth, and many other animals. And people can get diseases such as hepatities by eating seafood that has been poisoned. Water are very important with human life…..
Solution? I think Government should movement industrial factories into Industrial Park, create many law about population growth, and put more can trash in public areas. I’m a student, I can plant trees, use less energy, reduce waste, many many thing I can do to save our environment. I think so.
Topic 4: Living in the city/ countryside
1. Talk about the advantages of living in the countryside.
2. Talk about the disadvantages of living in the countryside.
3. What do you think the most serious problem in the big cities
4. Tell three famous cities around the world. Where are they?
5. What should you do to solve that problem?
6. What city in the world would you like to visit most? Why?
Example 1: The advantages of living in the countryside
Living in the countryside is really good for your life because of these reasons:
- First, living in the country can bring you a clean environment. The air is fresher and there are lots of trees, rice fields and rivers, you can walk on the fields or along the rivers to enjoy the clean and fresh air there in the early morning.
-Second, living in the countryside is cheaper than in the city because people there have lower income and don’t have the habit of spending a lot of money. If you live in the country, you can save a lot of money.
- Finally, people in the country are more friendly and opener than people in the city because they live near each other. People live together in a small village so they can talk countryside can have festivals and you can join and fell very happy. In conclusion, there are many benefits of living in the country.
Example 2: The disadvantages of living in the city
Many people find it difficult and unpleasant to live in the city because of these reasons. - First, the air in the city is getting more and polluted because the traffic is so heavy, the city roads are in bad conditions and the population is really big. There are fewer and fewer trees, lakes and rivers.- Second, the cost of living is much higher than in the rural areas. People have to spend more money on food, drink, clothes and other activities like traveling and entertainment, while the salary has not been much improved.- Finally, life in the city is more dangerous than in the countryside because of night clubs, discotheques, casinos… City people are easily attracted by social evils such as drinking, drug – talking or gambling…So, there are more crimes because some people don’t want to work but only want money to play.- In short, living in the city has many disadvantages so people have to struggle a lot to survive.
