Sarah

Vào ngày nghỉ cuối tuần đầu tiên, tôi cùng những người bạn mới quen đi dạo quanh khuôn viên trường. Thật thú vị khi nghĩ về cuộc sống ở đại học, gặp gỡ những người có thể sẽ trở thành bạn tốt của tôi. Thú vị nhất là tôi không phải giải thích với cha mẹ về việc mình sẽ đi đâu, gặp gỡ những ai hay mấy giờ về nhà!

Tối thứ Bảy, tôi theo người bạn cùng phòng đi dự tiệc. Những người dự tiệc đang bận chơi một trò chơi nào đó, và dường như chẳng ai để ý đến sự hiện diện của tôi. Đột nhiên, tôi cảm thấy thật lẻ loi. Kìm nước mắt, tôi vừa chạy về phòng vừa nghĩ ở trường nhất định tôi sẽ chẳng bao giờ cảm thấy thoải mái như ở nhà.

Ellen

Bạn cùng phòng của tôi lúc nào cũng mở toang cửa sổ, ngay cả lúc bên ngoài lạnh 10⁰C, và tối nào cũng đi ngủ lúc mười giờ. Khi cô ta bị ốm sau kỳ thi giữa học kỳ, cô ta đổ lỗi là do tôi đánh máy và để đèn sáng trong phòng khi cô ta cố đi vào giấc ngủ.

Lúc đầu, trường đại học khiến tôi hơi nản lòng. Tôi tốt nghiệp ở một trường trung học nhỏ. Sau nhiều năm gặp gỡ hoài một số người, thật thú vị, nhưng cũng hơi sờ sợ khi được ở một nơi mà có vẻ như tôi sẽ không bao giờ gặp một người đến lần thứ hai.

Brenden

Năm đầu đại học có lẽ là năm vi nhất và nhiều thách thức nhất trong đời tôi. Về mặt học tập, tôi haonf toàn ưa thích năm đầu tiên này. Tham gia vào dự án kỹ thuật cao cho tôi cơ hội vận dụng óc sáng tạo và kiến thức để giúp ích cho xã hội. 

Về mặt xã hội, tôi có thêm nhiều bạn khi học ngành kỹ sư và sống tại khu học xá của trường đại học St John. Lịch hoạt động xã họi của trường đại học mang lại vô số cơ hội gặp gỡ những sinh viên khoa khác cũng như những sinh viên cùng khoa, nhiều người trong số họ đã trở thành bạn thân của tôi.

Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales. Unusually, it gives people much needed experience of life outside the classroom, as well as the opportunity to study for their exams. The students, who are aged between 16 and 18 and come from all over the word, spend the morning studying. In the afternoon, they go out and do a really useful activity, such as helping on the farm, looking after people with learning difficulties, or checking for pollution in rivers.

One of the great things about Atlantic College students is that they come from many different social backgrounds and countries. As few can afford the fees of £20,000 over two years, grants are available.

A quarter of students are British, and many of those can only attend because they receive government help.

“I really admire the college for trying to encourage international understanding among young people", as Barbara Molenkamp, a student from the Netherlands, said. ''You learn to live with people and respect them, even the ones you don't like. During the summer holidays my mother couldn't believe how much less I argued with my sister."

To sum up, Atlantic College gives its students an excellent education, using methods which really seem to work.
